Santa Barbara, CA – Pantone, the “go-to” color expert of the world, recently announced the 2019 Color of the Year as Living Coral – a bright, yet warm, combination of pink and orange that evokes positivity and reminds us of a color found in nature. Every year since 2000, Pantone has analyzed fashion, culture, technology, and other current trends to make its decision on the Color of the Year. Living Coral is described by Pantone as “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge” and is also “evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of color.”
This year’s pick can’t help but make us think about the mesmerizing and beautiful, yet fragile coral reefs around the world that are deteriorating due to factors both in and out of human control. According to Forbes, 50 percent of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia has died in the last two years. These delicate, underwater ecosystems provide homes for many marine life and organizations like The Coral Reef Alliance are committed to taking actions to save and restore them. The Key West City Commission also recently voted to ban harmful chemicals that are present in many sunscreens to protect their local coral reefs. "Up to 70 percent of sunscreens on the U.S. market contain oxybenzone, and up to 8 percent contain octinoxate. That includes offerings by Neutrogena, Coppertone and Aveeno," NPR reports.
Pantone’s choice reminds us that more needs to be done in our mission to save and protect our coral reefs, but even so, the color elicits optimism and liveliness.
